Fleming becomes a qualified doctor and joins the Inoculation Departmet of St. Mary's Hospital as a junior assistant.

Outbreak of World War 1. Fleming works with an Army medical unit.

Fleming marries Sally McElroy (also called Sarah and Sareen).

Fleming becomes professor of bacteriology at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School; also discovers penicillin.

Fleming presents penicillin studies to Medical Reasearch Club.

Howard Florey and Ernst Boris Chain begin to work together to purify penicillin.

1940
|
Florey and Chain purify penicillin by vacuum freeze-drying. Penicillin is first tested on animals.

|
Human tests of penicillin begin.

1942

Success of penicllin brings world recognition for Fleming.

1943
|
Penicillin goes into mass production in the United States.

1944

Fleming is Knighted as Sir Alexander Fleming; recieives several medals, honors, and memberships.

World War 2 ends. Fleming receives many more honors, including sharing the Nobelprie with Florey and Chain.
